Finnair Open-Jaw Europe: Melbourne from $1181 Return - Fly into London, Home from Other Cities [Oct '26 - Jun '27] @ BTF

An open-jaw ticket lets you fly into one city and home from another, so you don't have to backtrack to where you started. Finnair just made Melbourne its Australian gateway, so these fares are worth a look even if you've never flown via Helsinki before.

The best of the bunch flips the usual logic on its head. Flying into London and home from Helsinki is $1181 return - that's $204 cheaper than the plain London round trip at $1385, and a full $534 less than simply flying to Helsinki and back at $1715. Ten of the fourteen open-jaw combinations we found beat at least one of those two baseline round trips, so the flexibility to fly into one city and out of another is often free, and sometimes you're 'paid' to take it.

Fares cover travel from 29 September 2026 through to 18 June 2027, spanning the northern autumn, a full winter and into the following summer. All prices are return in AUD.

About Finnair

Finnair is Finland's flag carrier and a member of the oneworld alliance, built around its Helsinki hub linking Europe with Asia and North America. Melbourne became Finnair's Australian gateway from late October 2026, flown non-stop (with a technical stop in Bangkok) as flight AY146 outbound and AY145 on the return - see our Finnair airline guide(beatthatflight.com) for ratings and partnerships.

That Bangkok stop is on the same aircraft and flight number, so it isn't a connection you need to plan around, but if your itinerary does involve changing flights there, check the minimum connection time at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK)(minimumconnectiontime.com). The real connection to watch is at Helsinki, where every one of these fares changes onto a Finnair European service to reach London or your open-jaw exit city - check the minimum connection time at Helsinki (HEL)(minimumconnectiontime.com) against your itinerary before booking.

Making the most of an open-jaw

All of these route into London first, which gives you a natural base to start exploring before flying out from somewhere else on the way home:

  • Helsinki is the standout - the cheapest fare in this whole batch, and a chance to loop up to the Nordics after a London stop.
  • Dublin, Stockholm and Zurich are the next cheapest exits, each an easy rail or short-haul hop from London or from each other if you want to string together a longer loop.
  • Paris and Amsterdam suit a classic Western Europe run down through France and the Low Countries.
  • Milan, Rome and Venice work well together for an Italy-focused trip, with Venice the priciest of the three and only bookable from late February 2027.
  • Edinburgh gets you Scotland without doubling back to London, while Barcelona covers Spain.
  • Dubrovnik and Split are the two Croatian options - both cost more than flying plain London return, and Split only opens up from April 2027, so they're really for travellers who specifically want the Adriatic coast rather than a saving.

Rail and short-haul flights between these cities are straightforward, and an open-jaw means you skip the flight back to London at the end just to catch your flight home.
